On March 13, 1939, Prentice Elaine Canty was born to the late Horace and Ida Belle Canty. The family made their home in Birmingham, Alabama, where Elaine grew up within a close-
knit family circle. She and her siblings, Mary Belle, Viola, Emma, Margaret, and Dwight immersed themselves in community life and they learned early on to respect their elders and to love and protect their family.
Prentice (Elaine) attended Birmingham Public Schools and Alabama State University, before moving to Washington, DC in the late 1950’s. Prentice worked in the Navy Department for over 40 years before retiring. Elaine as she is affectionally called joined the New Southern Rock Baptist Church and held several positions before her health began to fail.
In 1959 Prentice met and married the late Charles J. Curtis, Sr. She was a nurturing mother to their four sons Charles, Michael, and Derek, with one son Tony preceded her in death as an infant.
Prentice love for her New Southern Rock Church family was close second to her devotion to her siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was very much involved in her Church as she followed her passion for serving others, she held several church positions throughout her membership such as Church Secretary to Pastor White; Sunday School Teacher; Youth Coordinator, Heaven Bound Choir; Courtesy Choir; F.A.E. Choir; Sanctuary Choir; Hymn Choir; Consolation Choir; Music Council; Drama Ministry; Pastor's Aide Ministry; Single's Minstry and the Scholarship Committee just to name a few she was a valued member of New Southern Rock.
Her passing leaves quite a void in the family circle; however, the memories linger in our hearts and minds. Her steadfast devotion to family, her giving heart, her smile, her community-minded spirit, her insistence on respect, will not be forgotten. There will remain many fond recollections of Prentice in the hearts of everyone that came into her life. Her passing on April 4, 2023, marks the beginning of a mere night’s sleep until she hears her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, say “Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” (Matthew 25:21)
