Psalms 23:4 "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil".

Today we celebrate the home going of Michael “Mike” Reid, Sr., who departed this life on Saturday, October 2, 2021.

Michael was born on June 23, 1950, to the late Gladie Lee Reid and Mary Lou (Murphy) Reid. He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, with two sisters and one brother. In 1956, he moved to Washington, D.C., with his mother and siblings. He attended and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C. Shortly after graduating in 1968, he enlisted and served in the United States Navy. After being honorably discharged, he met and married the late Mary Louise (Shorts) Reid. In this union, they raised their three sons: Steven, Marvin and Michael, Jr.

Michael held employment as a supervisor and manager with various retail stores in the D.C. Metropolitan area. In 1986, he joined the Second Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where he was baptized and attended Sunday services with his family. He was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, and often invited family and friends to the house to watch the Cowboys versus the Redskins games. He enjoyed teaching his three sons the game of football and basketball, taking the family on yearly summer trips to Myrtle Beach, and occasional backyard pig roasts.

In 2001, Michael met his long-time companion Yvonne Sutton with whom he spent the last twenty years of his life. Michael, “Lubby” or “Pop Pop” as most people called him, and Yvonne enjoyed traveling, hosting cookouts, watching Lifetime movies, cooking together, and having quiet dinners at home. Michael was a loving father to his children and became a role model father to Yvonne’s three children: Sharon, Sariah, and Martin. Michael was widely known and highly respected among his neighbors and friends, and he was known for his famous fried chicken on Sundays. He enjoyed dancing, sports, and spending time with family. Michael’s smile lit up the room, and his hugs and kisses were infectious.

Michael was preceded in death by his father and mother, Gladie Lee Reid and Mary Lou Reid; his sister, Marcia Lynn Reid, his wife Mary Louise Reid and his adopted son Martin Sutton-El.

Michael leaves to cherish his loving memory his three sons, Steven DeWayne Reid, Sr., Marvin Reid and Michael Reid, Jr. (Yolanda); six grandchildren, Shamekia Sanders, Steirra Reid, Michael Reid III, Steven Reid, Jr., Marques Reid, and Miguel Reid; great-grandchild Dassan Henderson; one sister, Sandra Chambers (Robert) and one brother, Larry Reid (Emma). His long-time companion, Yvonne Sutton; his adopted daughters, Sharon Sutton and Pastor Sariah Beatty; five grandchildren, Jherron Sutton, Pastor Levonte Knight (Pastor Shante), Delaunte Knight (Porshia), Evangelist Shante Knight, (Ryan) and Jenae Knight; nine great-grandchildren, Dyonna Daniels, Elijah Farmer, Kyla, Kelsi, Kameron, Sarai and Saniyah Knight, and Jahmir and Jaheim Thompson. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
