Margaret Elizabeth Norwood
October 5, 1915 to June 29, 2021

Margaret Elizabeth Norwood, gained her wings on the morning of Tuesday, June 29, 2021. She was 106 years old and resided in Washington, D.C.

Margaret was born on October 5, 1915 in Burke County, North Carolina where she lived amongst family until coming to DC when she was 18 years old. She lived in DC with her family until 1953 when she married and moved to Harlem New York. Margaret joined the American Legion Women’s Auxillary where she became the first black President to serve in the NY County. She traveled most of the country with them and remained in Harlem for 53 years until moving back to DC with family in 2003.

This remarkable woman has lived through nine decades and experienced the evolution of the world we live in today. Above everything she had seen in her lifetime she was most proud and overjoyed when seeing President Obama elected into the White House. At a point in her life there was no segregation during her time growing up and she had lived long enough to see a black man elected into the highest office in the US. To live through the times in which she did and to have lived to see a black man walk through those front doors and live in the White House was a sigh of relief and an achievement in the culture of the struggles she seen so many endure.
