Margaret Coker McLaurin was born on March 27, 1925, in Fayetteville, NC, to the late Lula Mae Coker and Arthur Grooms. After the death of her mother, Margaret was reared by her aunt and uncle, Lillie and Lazarus Coker, in a home where God was exalted; and at an early age, she began her journey with the Lord. Margaret graduated from E.E. Smith Senior High in Fayetteville, NC, in 1945.

In 1952, Margaret married the late Reverend Walter Mathis McLaurin, Jr. Margaret had four daughters, Janice, Allene, Ruth, and Linda.
