Julia Mae Harkness was born in Clio, South Carolina, December 23, 1941. She was the second child of the late Dessie Bethea and Earnest Kinney, Sr. Julia Mae transitioned and got her wings on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Anne Arundel Medical Center. After graduating high school in Clio, SC, Julia Mae started a new life in Washington, DC in 1959. In 1960, she married Eugene Harkness and from that union was born her only child, Jacquelyn whom she loved dearly. They were two peas in a pod. Julia Mae had a gift of working with her hands. She was a hair stylist for many years and was known for her great hair cutting. After leaving the hair industry, Julia Mae worked for the grocery industry and became deli manager for Snider's Grocery Store. She was known miles away for her great platters, as well as being a great seamstress. She also loved to cook and host gatherings with family and friends! Julia Mae accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and joined St. Peter’s AME Zion Church in Clio, SC. She later joined Judah Temple AME Zion Church in Bowie, MD under the leadership of Pastor Scott Moore. She served on the usher board, catering ministry, homeless shelter ministry and led the senior ministry. She loved and adored her church family. She always talked about how GOD blessed her with a special church and church family. Julia Mae leaves to cherish the memories of her life; daughter, Jacquelyn Harkness (Partner - Darryle Carter); grandchildren, Julia Harkness, Hakeema Shorter (Kharee), Jameel Jones (Quaniesha); great grandchildren, Jalyn, Zahra, Zakai, Sarai; sister, Alice Kinney; sister-in-law, Betty Kinney. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.\nThe Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. May the name of the Lord be praised.
