Derek Hamm

–

Washington, District of Columbia

Derek Ricardo Hamm, lovingly known as Der-doo, was born on January 6, 1957, in Washington, DC, and passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026. A charismatic and smart man who remained faithful, Derek was endearing and helpful to all who knew him. His creative spirit, loyalty, and dedication to his loved ones made him an unforgettable presence in the lives of many.

As a child, Derek was doted on by his grandparents “Mom-Bea & Pop.” Derek attended St. Peter’s Catholic Elementary School and Mackin High School in Washington DC. While in high school, Derek enjoyed modeling. He and several modeling friends would go out on assignments around the city for various designers and retailers. He looked very distinguished in a suit and had the confidence and charisma to walk that cat walk!

Derek served the District of Columbia for many years as a dedicated Voter Assistant for the Board of Elections, where his intelligence and love for his city shone through. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Derek's loyalty to the Redskins was well-known, and he followed the careers of Venus & Serena Williams and Coco Gauff with great interest. Derek was also a devoted member of St Peter’s Catholic Church, and his faith played a significant role in his life. As Philippians 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," Derek lived this verse, placing great importance on taking care of his beloved mother, Rosetta.

Derek was a man of many talents; his interest in computer science highlighted his smart and inquisitive nature. He had a knack for staying informed and engaged in current events, often sparking discussions with his mother, Rose, and sister, Angela about the political happenings around Capitol Hill. His love of writing poetry and his immaculate handwriting were just some of the unique qualities that made Derek unforgettable.

He leaves behind his loving mother, Rosetta Hamm, his caring sister Angela (Ken) Taylor, a half-brother Aaron and half-sister Tracy, his adoring nephews, Jason and Azariah Taylor, and a host of cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard Hamm, and his son, Derek Jr.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 12, 2026, at 10:00amEDT at St. Peter's Church on Capitol Hill. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00amEDT at the same location. Derek will be laid to rest on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 11:30amEDT at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Derek's life was a testament to the goodness & mercy of the Lord! We invite you to leave memories and upload photos to the memorial page as we celebrate and remember Derek's life. Let's continue to honor his legacy by living out the values he cherished most – love, loyalty, and faith.
