Dalous Miller

–

Bowie, Maryland

Dalous’ joy in life was his relationship with Jesus and his family. The second child of Pearl (Smith) Miller and Isaiah Miller, Dalous was born in Princess Anne, Virginia, on August 21, 1938.

He graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1958 and entered Norfolk State College for a year before transferring to Howard University in Washington, DC. Dalous earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Architecture and Engineering in 1963.

Dalous loved his work as a commercial architect. In 1968 he joined John Carl Warnecke & Associates, where he designed notable buildings on the campus of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and the Hart Senate Office Building and the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and more importantly, gained friends for life. He also worked with McKissack and McKissack, the oldest Black-owned architecture and construction company in the United States for a number of years. He retired from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

In addition to enjoying fishing trips with his brothers-in-law, he got a kick out of watching Western movies and National Geographic documentaries, taking day trips with his kids, savoring a berry smoothie, reading his Bible on his deck, and practicing his “phone ministry” when he would call family and friends with words of encouragement, prayers and his humor. No matter where life took him, Dalous would share his love of Christ and how he treasured his wife and children. For more than 50 years, Dalous faithfully answered the call to share the gospel by teaching Sunday School and serving as a deacon at First United Church of Jesus Christ (Apostolic), Harvest Temple Church of God, and The Upper Room Fellowship, where he led also as an elder.

Dalous died on October 5, 2022, peacefully at home in his sleep. He was 84 years of age.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Isaiah and Pearl Miller, and his brother, Milton Miller.

Dalous is survived by his wife of 53 years, Velma Miller; their children: Deidre Miller of Arlington, VA, and Darian Miller of Chesapeake, VA; his cousin, Carnell Smith of Chesapeake, Virginia; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
